Turning 65 in Daytona Beach? Your Complete Medicare Enrollment Checklist

Turning 65 is one of the most significant milestones in your financial and healthcare life. For most Americans, it’s the moment they finally become eligible for Medicare — but figuring out what to do, and when, can feel overwhelming. The rules are complicated, the deadlines are strict, and making the wrong move can result in permanent penalties.

If you’re approaching 65 in the Daytona Beach area, this checklist will walk you through everything you need to do — and when.

Step 1: Understand When Your Medicare Eligibility Begins

Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. This is your first — and most important — enrollment window. Missing it without a qualifying reason can mean permanent late enrollment penalties.

Important: If your birthday is on the 1st of the month, your Medicare starts on the 1st of the prior month.

Step 2: Decide Whether to Enroll in Medicare Part B Now or Wait

If you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. If you’re still working and covered by an employer group health plan (with 20 or more employees), you may be able to delay Part B without penalty.

However, if your employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare becomes your primary insurance and you should enroll in Part B to avoid gaps in coverage.

This is one of the most common areas where people make costly mistakes — it’s worth speaking with an independent broker to review your specific situation.

Step 3: Choose How You Want to Receive Your Medicare Benefits

Once enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you have two main paths:

  • Medicare Advantage (Part C): A private plan that bundles hospital, medical, and often drug coverage — plus extras like dental and vision. Usually has lower premiums but uses provider networks.
  • Medicare Supplement + Part D: Keep Original Medicare and add a Supplement (Medigap) plan to cover your out-of-pocket costs, plus a standalone Part D drug plan. More flexibility to see any Medicare-accepting doctor nationwide.

Florida has an excellent selection of both types of plans. An independent broker can compare every option available in your zip code at no cost to you.

Step 4: Enroll in Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Even if you don’t take many medications right now, enrolling in a Part D drug plan when you’re first eligible is strongly recommended. If you go without creditable drug coverage for 63 or more consecutive days after your IEP, you’ll pay a permanent late enrollment penalty added to your premium for as long as you have Part D.

Step 5: Review Your Doctors and Prescriptions

Before choosing a plan, make a list of:

  • Your current doctors and specialists
  • Any hospitals you prefer or have used
  • Every prescription medication you take (name, dosage, frequency)

This helps ensure your doctors are in-network (for Advantage plans) and your medications are covered on the plan’s formulary at a cost you can manage.

Step 6: Don’t Forget Dental, Vision, and Hearing

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing. If you want these benefits, you’ll need to either select a Medicare Advantage plan that includes them or purchase standalone supplemental plans. This catches many new Medicare enrollees off guard — so plan ahead.

Step 7: Set a Reminder for the Annual Enrollment Period

Every year from October 15 to December 7, you can review and change your Medicare coverage for the following year. Plans change their premiums, benefits, and drug formularies annually, so it’s worth doing a quick annual checkup — even if you’re happy with your current plan.
