Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in Florida: What’s the Difference?

If you’re turning 65 or new to Medicare in Florida, you’ve likely come across two terms that sound confusingly similar: Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap). While both work alongside Original Medicare, they function very differently — and choosing the wrong one could cost you thousands of dollars a year.

At USA Benefits Group in Daytona Beach, we help Floridians navigate these decisions every day. Here’s a clear breakdown to help you understand your options.

What Is Original Medicare?

Before comparing plans, it helps to understand what Original Medicare covers. Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, and Medicare Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. Together, they’re called “Original Medicare.” The catch? Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. You’ll face deductibles, copays, and coinsurance — and there’s no out-of-pocket maximum. That’s where Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans come in.

What Is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Instead of getting your benefits directly from the federal government, you get them through the private plan — which must cover everything Original Medicare does, and often more.

Key features of Medicare Advantage in Florida:

  • Often includes extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drugs (Part D)
  • Many plans have $0 or low monthly premiums
  • You typically use a network of doctors and hospitals (HMO or PPO)
  • You’ll have copays and an annual out-of-pocket maximum
  • Florida has one of the most competitive Medicare Advantage markets in the country

What Is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

Medicare Supplement plans — commonly called Medigap — work alongside Original Medicare to help pay the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare doesn’t cover: deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Key features of Medicare Supplement in Florida:

  • Works with any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — no networks
  • Predictable, consistent costs make budgeting easier
  • Higher monthly premiums than most Advantage plans, but fewer surprise bills
  • Does not include drug coverage (you’ll need a separate Part D plan)
  • Standardized plan types (Plan G, Plan N, etc.) mean the same benefits regardless of which company you choose

Which One Is Right for You in Florida?

There’s no universal right answer — it depends on your health needs, your doctors, your budget, and your lifestyle. Some Floridians thrive with a low-premium Advantage plan that includes dental and vision. Others — especially those with chronic conditions or frequent medical needs — prefer the predictability and nationwide coverage of a Supplement plan.

A few questions to ask yourself: Do your current doctors accept Medicare Advantage networks? How often do you travel outside of Florida? Do you have chronic conditions requiring frequent care? Is a low monthly premium or predictable out-of-pocket costs more important to you?
