Explain Medicare Parts A, B, C & D to me

Chart explaining Medicare parts A, B, C and D

Medicare is divided into four distinct parts, each covering specific healthcare services:

1. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance):

  • Coverage: Inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Enrollment: Most individuals are automatically enrolled when they turn 65, especially if they’re receiving Social Security benefits.
  • Premiums: Typically premium-free if you or your spouse have paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

2. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance):

  • Coverage: Outpatient care, doctor services, preventive services, and durable medical equipment.
  • Enrollment: Optional, but it’s advisable to enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) to avoid late enrollment penalties, unless you have other credible medical coverage.
  • Premiums: Requires a monthly premium, which may vary based on income.

3. Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage):

  • Coverage: An alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), these plans are offered by private companies and often include additional benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Enrollment: Optional. To join, you must first be enrolled in both Part A and Part B.
  • Premiums: Varies by plan; you continue to pay your Part B premium plus any additional premium the plan may charge.

4. Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage):

  • Coverage: Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.
  • Enrollment: Optional, but recommended if you don’t have other credible prescription drug coverage to avoid late enrollment penalties.
  • Premiums: Requires a monthly premium, which varies by plan.

Which Parts Are Required and When:

  • Part A: Generally automatic and premium-free for most at age 65; it’s advisable to accept this coverage.
  • Part B: While optional, delaying enrollment without other credible coverage can result in late penalties.
  • Parts C and D: Both are optional. However, enrolling when first eligible can provide additional coverage and help avoid future penalties.

It’s important to assess your healthcare needs and existing coverage to make informed decisions about enrolling in Medicare parts. We will walk you through all of the options and help you choose the parts that are right for you and your budget.
