Florida insurance brokers

Most people in Daytona Beach and across Volusia County are currently looking at their 2026 insurance renewal notices and wondering one thing: Why did everything get so expensive?

If you are turning 65, managing a small business, or trying to find affordable coverage for your family, you aren't just looking for a policy: you are looking for a way to protect your finances from a system that seems to change every single year. Between the new Medicare Part D out-of-pocket caps, rising Part B premiums, and the shifting landscape of ACA health insurance Florida plans, staying on top of your coverage can feel like a full-time job.

I’m Nathan Curry, an independent Florida health insurance broker. My job isn't to sell you a specific brand; it’s to help you navigate these changes so you don't end up overpaying for a plan that doesn't actually cover your doctors. Whether you are in Daytona Beach, Port Orange, or Jacksonville, the decisions you make this month will affect your bank account for the next 365 days.

The 2026 Florida Insurance Landscape: What’s Actually Changing?

If you feel like the goalposts keep moving, you aren't wrong. For 2026, we are seeing some of the most significant shifts in Medicare and individual health insurance in a decade.

In Florida, we have one of the highest rates of Medicare Advantage participation in the country: about 60% of beneficiaries are in an "all-in-one" plan. But as we move into 2026, many of those plans are tightening their benefits. While premiums remain low (averaging just $2.11 in Florida), the extra "perks" like dental, vision, and OTC allowances are being scaled back by many carriers to stay profitable under new federal rules.

On the other hand, Medicare Florida beneficiaries who stick with Original Medicare are seeing a jump in costs. The standard Part B premium has moved to $202.90 per month, and the deductible is now $283. These aren't small increases, especially when you are on a fixed income.

The Situation: Why "Standard" Advice Fails Florida Residents

I recently sat down with a couple in Ormond Beach who had been on the same Medicare Advantage plan for four years. They liked their $0 premium and their gym membership. However, they hadn't checked their "Evidence of Coverage" for 2026.

When we looked at the numbers together, we discovered their primary cardiologist had left the network, and their tier-3 prescription drug: one they take every day: had moved to a higher cost-sharing tier. If they had auto-renewed, they would have been hit with thousands of dollars in unexpected costs by March.

This is the reality of the Florida market. Because we have so many options: over 611 Medicare Advantage plans statewide: the "best" plan last year is rarely the best plan this year. The same applies to life insurance Florida needs; as you age or your mortgage balance changes, that policy you bought ten years ago might be costing you double what a modern policy would.

The Breakdown: Your 2026 Florida Coverage Options

1. Medicare in Florida: The Big 2026 Shift

The headline for 2026 is the Part D out-of-pocket cap. For the first time, your total spending on covered prescription drugs is capped at $2,100. This is a massive win for anyone in Volusia County taking high-cost medications for diabetes or heart failure.

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap): If you want the freedom to see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, a Supplement (like Plan G) is still the gold standard.
  • Medicare Advantage: If you prefer a $0 or low-monthly premium and don't mind staying within a network (HMO/PPO), these plans are still very popular in the Daytona Beach area. Just be aware that the Maximum Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) limits can go as high as $9,350 this year.

2. ACA Health Insurance Florida (The Marketplace)

If you are under 65, self-employed, or working for a small business that doesn't offer coverage, the Marketplace is your primary option. Florida continues to lead the nation in ACA enrollment. Thanks to enhanced federal subsidies, many residents in Jacksonville and Port Orange still qualify for plans with $0 monthly premiums.

3. Group Health and Small Business Coverage

I work with businesses of all sizes across Volusia and Flagler counties. In 2026, many small business owners are moving away from traditional "one-size-fits-all" group plans and toward ICHRA (Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements). This allows you to give your employees a tax-free stipend to choose their own ACA plan, giving them more choice and you more budget stability.

4. Life Insurance and Annuities

Life insurance isn't just about a death benefit; in 2026, it’s a tool for "living benefits." Many of the Florida residents I help are looking for policies that allow them to access their death benefit if they are diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness. Similarly, annuities are seeing a resurgence as people look to protect their retirement savings from market volatility.

Common Insurance Mistakes in Florida

When you are looking for a health insurance broker Florida, you want someone who can point out the potholes before you hit them. Here are the most frequent mistakes I see:

  • The "Same Plan" Trap: Assuming your plan stays the same every year. In Florida, carrier networks and drug formularies change more frequently than in other states.
  • Ignoring the MOOP: People focus on the monthly premium but ignore the Maximum Out-of-Pocket. A $0 premium plan isn't "free" if you have a $9,000 hospital bill.
  • Missing the Enrollment Windows: Whether it’s the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) or the ACA Open Enrollment, missing these dates can leave you locked out of coverage for an entire year.
  • Overpaying for Life Insurance: Many people keep old whole-life policies with high fees when they could get much more coverage for less with a modern term or universal life policy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Insurance

How do I know if I qualify for a $0 premium ACA plan?

Qualification is primarily based on your household income and size. In Florida, the subsidies are very generous. If you are self-employed in Volusia County, I can run your numbers in about three minutes to see exactly what your net cost would be.

What is the difference between a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?

A Supplement (Medigap) works with Original Medicare and allows you to go to any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private alternative that replaces Original Medicare, often includes drug coverage and perks, but requires you to stay in a network.

Does my life insurance policy from 10 years ago still make sense?

Probably not. Life insurance products have evolved significantly. Modern policies often include "living benefits" that weren't available a decade ago. I offer a free policy review to see if we can get you better coverage for the same (or lower) cost.
